Fire Drill?

Do you remember all those times you have fire drills in elementary school? I certainly do. I even remember the drills in middle and high school. They were great because it meant a few minutes of missed class and a chance to be outside. There are even the times that a building on campus will have a fire drill, but I have never been part of that.

But have you ever heard of a ward fire drill? No? Really? Your BYU Singles' Ward never had a fire drill? Until today, neither had mine. It was seriously one of the most bizarre things ever.

My FHE group was just about to start our game when the building's fire alarm started going off. I didn't even know the building had alarms. I honestly thought the individual apartments just had smoke detectors.

Anyway, the alarm started sounding. We just figured someone was testing it, since it stopped for a little while and then started again. A girl poked her head in and asked if we were going to leave. So, my lovely FHE group got up and proceeded to the parking lot adjoining the apartment complex.

We then had to line up according to apartments and make sure all of our roommates were accounted for. One of my roommates was even assigned the task of making sure we knew where all of our roommates were.

Needless to say, I was surprised. I have never seen people so sincerely interested in making sure people knew what to do in an emergency. As weird as it was, I am glad to know that there is a plan. I just didn't expect to find out about it like that.

Grace frequently mentions fire drills she's experienced in preschool. I think they've been frequent and unplanned b/c they're doing construction on the roof! :o) She says about fire drills, "You have to move fast!"
